Aubrey Beardsley was only 25 years old. In the last 5 years of his life he had a stormy career. His work was and is revolutionary. This series; Lysistrata illustrates Aristophanes' piece from 400 BC. The women of Athens were fed up with the Peloponnesian War and wanted to force their men to end the fight with a sex boycott. Beardsley's compositions are surprising. Inspired by the images on Greek vases and Japanese prints, he creates a black and white world with pure surfaces and lines without depth. A true precursor of Art Nouveau.
